It was around 5:45 p.m. on day one, standing on Bai Dai Beach barefoot, watching the sky do something completely unfair to anyone who has to go back to an office. The northwest tip of Phu Quoc isn't just a geographic fact, it's an argument. The horizon stretches without interruption, and when the late-afternoon light starts its descent, the colors bleed into the water in gradients that feel almost unreal. This is where the Starbay sits, and the property seems to know exactly how fortunate that makes it. The room was where the stay began to feel like a real investment. Ours faced directly over the water, and the window wasn't decorative, it was the room's main event. The design is calm and contemporary without feeling sterile: warm wood tones, clean lines, linen that had clearly been chosen for actual sleep quality rather than just thread count marketing. The bathroom had space to think in. Everything worked. It sounds like a low bar but anyone who travels frequently knows how rarely that's a given. What impressed me most was how the resort balanced activity and stillness. The 50-metre lap pool runs parallel to the sea, which creates this pleasing visual effect where water meets water at the horizon. Swimming laps in the early morning, before the sun had fully committed to the day, felt like a small gift. But I was equally happy doing nothing at all at Amber Sands Beach Club, ordering a cold drink, watching the waves work the shoreline, and watching the kitchen run fresh seafood and charred cuts off an open-fire grill onto plates that had no business being as good as they were for a beachside spot. The Hoa Sim Spa is worth its own mention. I've had enough forgettable resort massages to approach spa bookings with mild suspicion, but the therapists here are skilled in a way that's immediately obvious. Unhurried, intuitive, not mechanical. We booked the tension soother, added the sauna afterward, and came out substantially more human than when we'd walked in. The space is quiet without being hushed, and the natural product lines are things you can actually smell and feel working. What tied the whole stay together was the staff. Not in a vague way but in a specific, memorable way. When we had a small question about a shuttle on our last morning, the response wasn't a policy recitation. It was a person solving a problem. That instinct to treat guests as individuals rather than room numbers ran through the whole team, from the beach attendants to the breakfast crew who remembered how I took my coffee by day two without being asked. A few notes for future guests: if you're traveling with kids, the resort is better equipped than it first looks. The kids' club and game room kept the younger guests in the neighboring villa busy on a grey afternoon when the beach wasn't an option. And if you hold IHG status, the recognition feels real here, not just a checkbox. The only honest caveat is that the northern location means you're somewhat committed to staying within the resort's orbit. There's no walkable town nearby. But that turned out to be less of a limitation and more of a permission slip. The Starbay is fully self-contained in a way that makes you wonder why you'd want to leave anyway. We checked out on a Saturday morning and stood at the entrance a little longer than we needed to. That reluctance to leave, the moment when you start mentally calculating when you could come back, is probably the most honest thing I can say about this place.
